Meet Chukwuma Nzeogwu, The Man Who Caused The Nigerian Civil War Because Of His Selfish Interest

Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu has a middle name Kaduna because he was born in Kaduna and spent a huge part of his life there,he was born in 1937 and died in 1967 spending a meagre 30 years on earth, after Nigeria gained Independence from the British,Nigeria’s democratic journey began but Nzeogwu halted that democracy and introduced Military rule to Nigeria

Nzeogwu Joined the Nigerian Army in 1957,he was first posted to Enugu where he served under Aguiyi Ironsi who happened to be the second in command to a British man, soon after he was posted to the 5th Battalion in Kaduna and he met Olusegun Obasanjo there, his colleagues in the Military who were Hausa gave him the name,Kaduna because he loved the town so much and surprisingly the name stuck to him

In the wee hours of a remarkable January 15th 1967,Nzeogwu led some group of purely Igbo soldiers to attack the house of then premier of Northern region Sir Ahmadu Bello who lost his life in the process, the premier of Western region was not spared either,The Finance minister lost his life too,the premier of Eastern region was spared, not a single notable politician of Igbo extraction was killed

Because of his selfish love for his tribe,he plundered Nigeria into this mess that its effect is still being felt till today,he is basically the reason why no Igbo man has assumed the seat of the presidency of the federal republic till now,it is surprising that the Igbo started the killings and when the northerners retaliated, they shouted foul play and insisted on Biafra, this article is not meant to open old wounds but it is for the sake of History,so Nigerians can learn and move ahead

Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu was trapped in an Ambush in a town near present day Nsukka where he was killed in action, his body was identified and he was buried in a military cemetary in Kaduna, the surprising part of this whole story was that after Biafra was defeated and the war ended,it was then Nigeria’s Head of state Yakubu Gowon who ordered that he be buried in the Military cemetary with full military honour,I guess the reason for this move is to calm the already brewing tension between the Northerners and Easterners but in my own opinion, truth be told,Chukwuma Nzeogwu is not a hero,he was a villain
