Rape culture is an act a lot of people are against. The internet is boiling at the moment as the number of rape keeps increasing and victims are not only raped but murdered in the process.
The sad part is that the same religious leaders who are supposed to speak against and teach the populace the right ways have also been caught in the disgraceful act.
Here’s a list of five men of God who have been arrested for allegedly raping members of their church.
Busola, who is married to popular musician Timi Dakolo, in June 2019 accused Pastor Fatoyinbo of raping her twice. Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo is the presiding Pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) church, one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing churches.
Things went south for him after first being accused by a member of his church, Ese Walter for alleged s3xual relations. A few years after this first story, the Pastor was in the news again when Busola Dakolo also accused him. The allegations went viral on social media with some saying it had triggered Nigeria’s #MeToo moment.
Mrs. Dakolo told YNaija that she was only 16 when Fatoyinbo came to her family residence in Ilorin and raped her, deflowering her in the process. The mother of three said the first encounter happened on a morning when Fatoyinbo knocked on the door of her family home in Ilorin. The family had been a long-time member of COZA.
The allegation also forced the pastor to go on “leave of absence from the pulpit” for a month because it was the “right thing to do”. He, however, denied any wrongdoing.
Busola however in September 2019 sued the founder of COZA to court for intentionally inflicting and causing her continuous emotional distress. In a reaction to the lawsuit, Fatoyinbo filed a counter-claim stating that the accusations from Busola should be dismissed because it was frivolous and statute-barred.
Mrs Dakolo’s allegation came six years after Mr Fatoyinbo faced allegations of sexual misconduct and adultery from two women, including Ese Walters. The two other women did not accuse Mr Fatoyinbo of raping them, and they also largely avoided confronting him unlike Mrs Dakolo.
In what seem like an update after almost a year since the police began its investigations, Busola in a statement said the police “handed over its report to the Ministry of Justice in Abuja for onward prosecution of Biodun Fatoyinbo.”
Oprite Amakiri is another man of God who was been arrested for raping a church member.
The ‘feared’ evangelical pastor is facing jail after he used his trusted position to abuse children and adults in his congregation over 20 years, with help from his wife.
The self-styled prophet Michael Oluronbi, originally from Nigeria, was found guilty of the offenses against six women and a man, five of whom attended his church.
The General Overseer of Agape Baptist Church, Pastor Oprite Amakiri, has been arrested and detained at the Rumuolumeni Police Division in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The 50-year-old randy pastor confessed to how he deceived a member of his church and raped her 18-year-old sister before he was exposed and dragged to the police.
Amakiri was said to have told about 200 members of his church that he had been battling waste pain for the past two years and stressed that God told him that a girl between the age of 12 and 18 years old would be needed to massage his waist for him to be healed.
Pastor Sunday Egbo of Christ Mercy Ministry, Ajuona Obukpa, in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu, was arrested and confessed to raping one of his church members, Ukwueze Ifebuche Blessing, in an attempt to perform a money ritual.
Egbo, who was paraded alongside 36 other suspects at the Enugu Police Command headquarters, was said to have invited his victim for a prayer session when he had the carnal knowledge of her.
According to reports, Egbo asked the victim to come along with the picture of her sick brother for prayers.
It was revealed that Egbo ordered her to remove her clothes, but the victim refused and the pastor slapped her and tore her clothes and raped her.
“Egbo seized her pants, brassiere and brought out a small bottle and wanted to insert it in her private parts, but she struggled and ran naked to the door and shouted, which attracted neighbours who invited the police to rescue her and arrest the pastor,” it was further revealed.
Williams Okon Bassey
Apostle Williams Okon Bassey of Mount Zion Light House Full Gospel Church was arrested for allegedly raping his 20-year-old daughter multiple times, which led to three different pregnancies that were aborted by his wife.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Odiko MacDon said Bassey started having s3xual intercourse with his daughter in the church vestry at the age of 13, threatening to place a curse on her if she told anyone about it.
His daughter confessed in the statement that the relationship resulted in three pregnancies which were all aborted by her mother, adding that her father always demanded 3ex from her before paying her school fees or meeting her needs.
The General Overseer of Mount Zion Ministries, in Obosi, Evangelist Chukwudi Chukwumezie, also known as Agudo Jesus was arrested for raping a minor.
The pastor, who was confirmed by witnesses to have been involved in previous cases of rape, involving minors, was said to have lured the victim to his church, with the prophecy that she had a bright future but was hindered by evil spirits.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, who paraded the suspect, told journalists that the police obtained a medical report, showing that the victim (name withheld) had a penetration, and the hymen lacerated.
The victim, a 15-year old SSS1 student had been lured by the pastor into his car, after conducting a deliverance session on her. She told the police;
“I didn’t know what happened immediately I entered his car, but I regained consciousness in a room, and I was naked, and the pastor was on top of me, and there was blood in my private part.”
But the denied having canal knowledge of the minor, insisting that the girl was being used to set him up by another pastor, who was operating at Obosi.
